Dystopia/Utopia has been a social impact art project based on photography. The focus group of Dystopia/Utopia project have been teenagers from 12 to 17 years of age and the project has been executed together with organizations and institutions that offers a range of services for children and teenagers. Goal of the Dystopia/Utopia project has been to concretize future views of participating teenagers through the concepts of dystopia and utopia. The method for realizing the insights about the future has been to find locations that reflect participants' utopic and dystopic scenarios and to photograph each individual in the selected locations. Two photographs of dystopia and utopia have been shown together with a photograph that focused on the participant's present situation. All together these three pictures have formed a photographic triptych.
To achieve concrete influence on participants lives, a pathway to future has been created together with the artists after the photo shooting work period. Questions to be answered by the participants have been: How to avoid the dystopia and how to achieve the utopia?
Dystopia/Utopia project has been executed 5 times in collaboration with several institutions in Finland 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. The project has been funded by Kone Foundation, Myrsky and Taaleri Oy.
